Staff Profile

Darrell Calvillo is an active solo competitor, band leader, musical arranger, studio musician, teacher, band clinician, and is the proprietor of the agency DC Music with over a decade of professional experience.

Darrell received his first formal bagpiping instruction from Jeffrey Henderson and the Glendora High School Pipe Band. Darrell has since studied music theory and performance as a student at Citrus College with Gunnar Eisel, Alex Galvan, Bill Hoehne, Billy Kerr and Norman Mamey. These musical foundations haven combined with tutelage of master pipers Murray Henderson, Ian Whitelaw and Seumas Coyne. This mixture of classical and piping education has gifted Darrell with extensive experience and knowledge of not just a specialization in Celtic bagpiping but western music as a whole.

As a member of the grade 2 James J. Coyne Memorial Pipe Band since 2004, Darrell has served as Pipe Sergeant since 2006. He is also a principal instructor for the band's parent organization - the James J. Coyne Memorial School of Piping and Drumming. Darrell has taught and mentored numerous competition bands, performance bands and scores of individual students over a decade of experience.

As a performer Darrell is a member of the Celtic/World band Silent Planet and also performs with various other bands, or as a soloist at various public and private events around North America. In the recording industry Darrell has spent countless hours in the studio and recently has been featured by Lee Whittaker, KC and the Wright Combination and Robbie Bray. Darrell has also been in television filmings for Bridezillas, TLC, and CSI - New York.
